After comfortable, needle-free local anesthesia, follicular units are extracted with a fine micromotor punch — exactly as in FUE. Grafts are inspected under magnification and kept in a chilled solution.

Neither is universally better — they solve different problems. DHI excels at precision, density and working between existing hairs; FUE handles larger sessions more efficiently. Your surgeon recommends the technique, or combination, that fits your loss pattern, donor capacity and goals rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.
Typically up to around 3,000–3,500 grafts per session, because pen implantation is more time-intensive than standard placement. For higher totals we may plan a combined DHI-plus-FUE session or, rarely, a second session after 12 months.
The timeline matches all modern transplants: temporary shedding in weeks 2–6, first new growth around month 3, visible transformation by month 6, and the complete, mature result at 12 months. We track your progress with photo check-ins at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.
